Interview Tip of the Month: How to answer: "What are your interests?" |
Interviewers ask this question to find out what parts of your job/career you're most passionate about and learn who you are outside work. Here's how to craft a great response:
- Be honest. Choose a genuine interest that you'll talk about with some emotion. Interviewers are skilled at detecting insincerity.
- If your interest is not work-related, make sure that it's at least work-appropriate.
- Provide a 3-part response that includes: what your interest is and how you participate in it; why it interests you; and what you get out of your interest.
- Use the question as an opportunity to make a real connection. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions about your interest and let it unfold as a conversation.
